I agree that some of those papers look rubbishy. But why include the paper on female representation on Netflix? Is your opposition purely ideological? That is, do you just reject any scholarly attention to female disadvantage?
The paper is pure advocacy of a political position - “engaging with claims presented by feminist movements” is virtuous, and anything less is bad. It assumes that women in positions of authority will, and should, preferentially place other women in on- and off-screen positions, as just one example.
I get that advocacy is just how social sciences work these days. That is all the more reason to challenge its acceptance as a meaningful way of investigating the world.
"we posit that our conceptualisation of anticipating violence as violence is not intended to validate all forms of anticipated violence."
Clever of them to leave themselves an out so that they can dismiss the "anticipation of violence" by any "minoritized groups" they dislike, such as Jews on campus. Truly, if they didn't have double standards, they'd have no standards at all.
I know liberals tend to use more fuzzy thinking than conservatives, but this seems like an extreme example of concept creep even for them: "violence" that has no actor, no malicious intent, no physical harm, no directly observable cause at all... It's almost reminiscent of medieval 'miasma' theory, adapted for a more metaphysical interpretation, or even an occult esoteric belief that the common thoughts of a group about violence can create an egregore that shares the trauma of victims even with those members of the group not directly victimized themselves... Although isn't this concept already covered in the medical literature as "paranoia"?
Seriously, is there no end to the semantic inflation they'll apply to words describing harm? Are these 'researchers' truly so safe, so coddled, so inexperienced in what it is like to be the victim of ACTUAL violence, that they genuinely can't or won't meaningfully differentiate among a brutal beating, verbal abuse, and a simmering anxiety? Their own delusional beliefs are literally making them mentally ill and yet they still find ways to deflect the blame onto everyone and everything else.

Hypocrite.
